Rick Poppell Obituary

Rick Poppell

Rick Poppell, 52, passed away on December 10, 2012 from injuries sustained in an airplane accident.

Rick was born in Wayne County on October 18, 1960 to the late Hyma and Thelma Page Poppell. He was educated in the Wayne County School System where he graduated in 1978. In 1980 Rick began selling produce from his pick up truck and from these humble beginnings, Rick’s business, Poppell’s Produce, grew to include twelve semi trucks and to serve the entire southeast area of the United States. His love for hard work also led him to begin another business endeavor, Canaan Land Properties, Inc. Rick was involved in numerous civic organizations and was elected business leader of the year in 2005 by the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce. He was a graduate of Leadership Wayne and served in the National Guard. Former president of the Wayne County Republican Party and Republican of the Year in 2001, Rick was instrumental in the elections of Gary Black as Commissioner of Agriculture and Sonny Perdue and Nathan Deal as Governors of the state of Georgia. Rick was president of the Gideon’s and served on the board of directors for Care Net and Free Hart. He was a member of the Jesup Church of God for over thirty years where he served on the Board of Trustees and the Church and Pastor’s Council. Rick was a Sunday School teacher at the Jesup Church of God and was on the Layman’s Board for the South Georgia Church of God.

Rick loved the water... boating and jet skiing were some of his favorite things to do while spending time with his family. He loved Christian Music and had a passion for flying. Of all the things Rick Poppell loved and accomplished, he loved God most of all, then family and then Church.
