Bagley_James EditJames Roy Bagley, Sr., 87, passed away Saturday morning, February 15, 2014 at home under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

He was born in Ware County, Georgia on November 18, 1926 to the late Dave E. and Jewel Music Bagley.  During his lifetime, Mr. Bagley worked as a farmer, as a high school math teacher, and as a heavy equipment operator.  He also served as an instrument flight instructor in the United States Army Air Corps and as a civilian instructor for the U.S. Air Force.  Mr. Bagley went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Georgia Teachers College (now Georgia Southern University) and a Master’s degree from the University of Georgia.

Mr. Bagley married the former Susie Liles in 1952, celebrating their 61st  wedding anniversary in 2013.   The Bagleys lived on the family farm in Wayne County for virtually their entire married life.  Both were longtime teachers in the Wayne County Schools, with Roy serving for 20 years as the head of the Math Department at Wayne County High School.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Bagley was preceded in death by his younger brother, Jerry Bagley, who died in combat in Vietnam in 1967.

Mr. Bagley is survived by his wife of 61 years, Susie Bagley of Odum; two sons, Jim Bagley and wife Barbara of McDonough, GA and David H. Bagley of Odum; a brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Willodene Bagley of Millwood, GA; four grandchildren: Jonathan Bagley of Waycross, GA, Will Bagley of Winston-Salem, NC, Jacob Bagley of Statesboro, GA, and Eden Bagley, of Odum and two great grandchildren, Jesse Bagley of Waycross and Haven Bagley of Odum. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m.  Monday, February 17, 2014 at Epworth United Methodist Church with Reverend Kathy Israel-McLeod officiating.

Interment will follow in Piney Grove Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Jonathan Bagley, Jacob Bagley, Will Bagley, Andy Johns, Joey Cornelius and Jason Cornelius.
