Jesup-James D. “Jerry” Nichols, 76, passed away Sunday, August 19, 2012, in the Wayne Memorial Hospital.

He was a native of Wayne County and retired with the rank of captain from the U.S. Marines after 20 years, and was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. He retired from ITT Rayonier as a senior purchaser after 18 years of service. He served 2 ½ terms on the Jesup City Commission, was a member of the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce serving two terms as vice-president, and was a member of the Jesup Lodge #112, F&AM. He was a communicant of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where he was active in the Men’s Group Committee and served as Sr. Warden for two terms. He was chairman of the Empire School Committee for two terms and served an extended period on the Community Relations Committee for FCI. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors are his wife of 52 years, Geneva Dyals Nichols of Jesup; 2 sons and a daughter-in-law, James D. Nichols, Jr., of Atlanta and Daniel L. Nichols and wife Pamela of Fleming Island, FL; grandchildren, Jimmy Nichols, Sarah Nichols and Katie Nichols, all of Fleming Island, FL; 2 sisters, Mary Lisa Palmer and Sharon Tootle both of Jesup; 3 brothers and sisters-in-law, Mike and Pamela Nichols of Pensacola, FL, Joe and Linda Lee of Douglasville, and Rev. Jack and Lynn Lee of Jesup.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 22 at 11:00 A.M. from the Howard & Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Jack Lee officiating. Burial will follow in the Jesup City Cemetery with military honors and Masonic rites.

Visitation will be Tuesday, August 21 from 5:30-8:00 P.M. from the funeral home.

Active pallbearers will be Jimmy Nichols, Jones Nichols, Dave Dyal, Mike Williamson, Matt Tootle, and Alan Hayes.
