Leonard Poppell, 78, passed away on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, GA.

A native and lifelong resident of Odum, GA, Leonard was born on June 22, 1939 to the late Robie and Doris Ridgdill Poppell. He was a 1957 graduate of Odum High School and attended Brewton Parker College in Mt. Vernon, GA. Leonard worked for several years at Rayonier until 1966 when he purchased the old Pearce’s Drug and Hardware Store in Odum. He operated the newly formed business, Poppell’s Hardware and later Poppell’s Amoco and Hardware with his father, for over thirty years when in 1996 the store was closed due to the widening of Highway 341. Leonard then became a full time farmer and work with Clary Fertilizer until his retirement. Leonard served on the Odum City Council for several years and was a former member of the Odum Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-eight years, Norma O’Quinn Poppell of Odum, son; Ralph Edward Poppell of New York, NY and Atlanta, GA; double first cousin, Linda Poppell Smith and husband, Judge G. R. Smith of Savannah, GA and cousins, Joshua Poppell Smith and family of Savannah, GA and Benjamin Ridgdill Smith and family of Atlanta, GA. Many other cousins and extended family members also survive.

Visitation will be from 6:00PM until 8:00PM on Friday, April 6, 2018 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup. Graveside funeral services will be a 11:00AM on Saturday, April 7, 2018 in Odum City Cemetery with Reverend Carl Ledbetter and Pastor Mike Whelan officiating.
