Douglas Daniel Obituary
Doug Daniel, 92, passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.
Doug was born May 16, 1920 in Brunswick, Georgia to the late Harry Hardy and Susie Dent Daniel. Hhie, his older sister who preceded him in death, was there to welcome him into the family. He spent his early years in Odum where he attended public schools. It was there that Doug began a love of reading that would last his whole life through. He served in the United States Army during World War II where he attained the rank of Buck Sergeant while serving in the Seventh Army under General Patton. Doug’s wartime service led him to various locations throughout the world including England, Africa, Sicily and Italy. After returning home from the war, Doug worked a civil service job for a short period before attending and later graduating from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro where he was a star athlete. Having been extremely gifted in sports from an early age, Doug continued the record setting performances of his childhood and high school years in college. Always known for his ability to run really fast, Doug stole seven bases in one game against Georgia Tech and a total of seventy-two in a thirty-one game college season. His athletic achievements were recognized when his class was inducted into the Wayne County Athletic Hall of Fame. He and his late wife, Marward Pearce Daniel, moved to Hilliard, Florida for a short period after Doug’s graduation from college where he spent one year teaching before returning to Odum. Doug then began working at his father-in-law’s drug and sundries store which eventually evolved into a hardware store and then into a booming furniture business. In the 1970’s Pearce’s Furniture was the largest independent furniture dealer in the state of Georgia. Doug always felt that being fair to his customers was of the utmost importance and was awarded the "Nice Guy Award", a title previously held by chain retailers, for his efforts. Doug was a very active member of the Odum Baptist Church where he was deacon emeritus and a former Sunday school teacher. He served on various committees at the church over the years and had been the oldest active member. Doug loved golf and was known as the "fastest man on the golf course" by his friends. He always enjoyed a good joke and was a charter member of the VFW Post 4583. Doug was always involved in various civic and volunteer organizations and loved the thrill of competition in any form. Though Doug remained a humble and unassuming man who never sought to gain personal attention, the stretch of HWY 27 from Jesup to Odum bears his name for all to see. Family was most important to him, and being remembered as a man of honesty.
He is survived by his wife of twenty-seven years, Sylvia Johnson Daniel of Odum; two daughters and sons-in-law, Bedell and Michael Mayers of Baxley and Mary Dent and Luther Harter of Odum; grandchildren, Justin Harter of Jesup, Benjamin and Brennan Harter of Odum, Will Lamb of Baxley and Pearce Lamb of Birmingham, Alabama; stepchildren and their spouses, Charlie and Jeanne Hinson of Jesup, Diane and Steven Brumbaugh of Memphis, TN, Marjorie Avra of Cumming, GA and Jimmy and Pam Hinson of Jesup and his God son, J. P. Morris, II of Watkinsville, GA.
Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at Odum Baptist Church with Reverends Carl Ledbetter and Gabe Gill officiating.
Interment will follow in the Odum City Cemetery with military honors.
Active pallbearers will be Justin Harter, Brennan Harter, Benjamin Harter, Will Lamb, Pearce Lamb, J.P. Morris, II, Jeff Pearce, Don Tyre and Craig Tyre. Honorary pallbearers will be Employees of Pearce’s Furniture, Staff of Hospice of South Georgia, Staff of Wayne County Home Care Services and the staff at the Rehabilitation Center in Wayne Memorial Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Hospice of South Georgia, 1625 Sunset Blvd., Jesup, GA 31545.
