Howard_Cornelia 001Cornelia Ruby Howard, 78, passed away on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro.

A lifelong resident of Southeast Georgia, Ruby was educated at Georgia Teacher’s College and began her teaching career at age eighteen.  She worked as an elementary school teacher for many years in Long County Schools and had also worked as a teacher and librarian in Chatham County Schools.  She loved teaching and was recipient of a Lifetime Teaching Certificate.  In 1986, Ruby retired after more than thirty years of teaching.  Retirement afforded her the opportunity to enjoy her favorite pastimes, cooking and reading, much more often and she enjoyed every minute she was blessed with.  Ruby enjoyed watching sports, including ice skating, and was an avid Atlanta Braves and Georgia Bulldog fan that rarely missed a game. Ruby’s strong spirit and determination allowed her to be a breast cancer survivor.  She supported Breast Cancer Research and was also a supporter of numerous Native American Tribes.   Her father, Dan Passmore and her husband, Robert “Bobby” Howard preceded her in death.

Survivors include her mother, Ella Passmore of Claxton; two daughters, Jami Miles and husband, Randy of Midway and Dr. Deana Livingston and husband, Rich St. John of Guyton; four grandchildren, Justin Miles, Trey Bragg and Ian and Rayna Morrison.

Visitation will be from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home with graveside funeral services following at 2:30 p.m. in Baggs Cemetery with Rev. Eric Rentz officiating.
